1596: Sikh Guru Har Govindji, the sixth sikh guru, was born.
1674: Sivaji crowns himself King of India.
1867: Baba Kharak Singh, freedom fighter, was born at Sialkot.
1903: Hiralal Sen shot the first Indian Advertisment sequences for Jabakusum (hair tonic) and Edward's Tonic.
1929: Sunil Dutt, leading Indian film actor and MP, was born
1947: Gandhiji writes to Mountbatten, with Pakistan conceded, to persuade Jinnah to amicable settle all outstanding points with Congress.
1970 :  Sunil Joshi, Indian cricketer, was born
1981: The worst-ever railway accident took place in Bihar when a train plunged in Samastipur river. The government places the official death toll at 268 plus another 300 missing; however, it is generally believed that the death toll is closer to 1,000.
1984: Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, militant Sikh religious preacher,died.

1990:
 Government of India decides to extend validity of passports to 10 years.
1996: Benazir Bhutto, Pakistan PM, gives green signal for opening up trade with India.
1997: U.S. Congress honours Mother Teresa with a gold medal.
1999: Paes-Bhupathi bagged their maiden Grand Slam doubles crown, defeating Goran Ivanisevic and Jeff Tarango in the final.

2004: 
Tamil is established as a "classical language" by the President of India, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, in a joint sitting of the two houses of the Indian Parliament.
